My Thoughts on When I Faked Amnesia to Break off My Engagement, My Fiancé Casually Told Me a Ridiculous Lie—“You Were in Love With Me Before You Lost My Memory.”
This title is definitely a mouthful, but the story itself? Surprisingly cute and fluffy! I went in expecting something heavy, but found myself chuckling along with the antics of Viola and Philip. It's a lighthearted read that doesn't take itself too seriously, which is exactly what I needed.
First Impressions
The premise alone hooked me. Viola faking amnesia to escape an unwanted engagement, only to have her fiancé drop the bombshell that they were secretly head-over-heels for each other before her "memory loss"? It's the kind of ridiculousness that's right up my alley. I was immediately curious to see how this tangled web of lies and misunderstandings would unravel.
What Works Well
The charm of this novel lies in its simplicity and the adorable interactions between the main characters. Philip, the male lead, is a blushing, awkward cinnamon roll, completely smitten with Viola. Their dynamic is genuinely sweet, and I found myself rooting for them despite their… questionable communication skills. The side characters, especially the mischievous cousin Rex, add a lot of flavor to the story. Rex is definitely a scene-stealer, and I wouldn't mind a side story dedicated to his chaotic antics! The translation quality is also consistently praised, making the reading experience smooth and enjoyable. It's the perfect palate cleanser if you're looking for something light and fluffy to balance out heavier reads.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the story, I can see why some readers found the prolonged misunderstandings frustrating. The "dense protagonist" trope can wear thin, especially when a simple conversation could resolve everything. The pacing also feels a bit off, with the resolution happening rather abruptly towards the end. I wish there was more depth to the characters and a more fleshed-out plot.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers were disappointed by the lack of a kiss scene, feeling it was a missed opportunity to cap off the romance. Others felt that the ML's past actions, intended to protect the FL, were actually harmful and based on the frustrating trope of hurting someone "for their own good."
Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "When I Faked Amnesia..." is an enjoyable and fluffy read. If you're looking for a lighthearted romance with adorable characters and don't mind a bit of ridiculousness, this might be right up your street. Just be prepared for some prolonged misunderstandings and a potentially rushed ending. Overall, I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
