Author profile

Qing Dynasty time travel is a crowded genre, and this one distinguishes itself mostly through its male lead. Yinreng is, for the setting, a genuinely unusual character: he falls first, falls harder, and keeps working to create a life where the FL can be comfortable even knowing she may not love him the way he loves her. That self-awareness in a crown prince, in a story set in the imperial harem, is not a small thing.

The female lead complements him well. She's not trying to rewrite history or outsmart the system. She's clever and kind and exerts influence quietly, which suits both her character and the slice-of-life rhythm the story settles into. The family dynamics are warm without being saccharine.

The timeline jumps are the main structural complaint. The narrative moves back and forth in a way that can be genuinely disorienting, and readers who need a clear chronology will feel it. The latter half of the novel takes an alternate history turn, including some choices that pull the story in unexpected directions, and not everyone will stay on board for that.

The harem elements are present. The author handles them with care relative to the genre norms, but they're there.

For readers who want a sweet historical romance with a devoted male lead and a female protagonist who doesn't need to be the smartest person in the room to be interesting, this one delivers.

Synopsis

Cheng Wanyun died suddenly. After traveling to the past, she barely enjoyed any good days before being labeled as a low-ranking concubine in the Yuqing Palace. Cheng Wanyun: “…” Everyone knows that the life of Yinreng ends in misery. But now, Yinreng is still a young man, only fifteen years old—handsome, bright, gentle, and proud of himself. Cheng Wanyun calculated and found that there were at least twenty more years before Yinreng would be imprisoned and die. So… she decided to lie down for now. If it’s a waste, then so be it. Anyway, she wasn’t going to move. Let them imprison him, what’s the difference where she lies down? Others were busy vying for favor, dancing in the garden in winter wearing thin silk. Cheng Wanyun was curled up by the stove, watching the snow while nibbling on delicious roast duck. Others were busy scheming for power, secretly sowing discord to incite punishment in the palace. Cheng Wanyun was raising her child, taking care of cats and dogs. Others were busy forming factions, with the First Consort and Second Consort standing in opposition. Cheng Wanyun was sipping on milk tea, playing cards: “Boom!” She had unknowingly reached the forty-seventh year of Kangxi’s reign and finally wondered: Why hadn’t she been discarded yet? After Yinreng accepted Cheng Gege (Low-ranking concubine) as his concubine, he slept with her, occasionally having strange dreams, all of which came true. Over time, he remembered more and more. It turned out those were his past life memories—conflict with his father, infighting with his brothers, the early death of a younger brother, his eventual downfall, and his death in isolation. Despite his fragmented memories, he cautiously navigated every step, walking on thin ice. Meanwhile, Cheng Gege… slept soundly without a care. Yinreng: So angry. But he still gently lowered his head and tucked the blanket around her. Perhaps the divine heavens knew his path would be full of hardship, so they blessed him with a small lucky star. He was bloodied, wielding a sword through the battlefield, while she was his peaceful haven, his paradise.
