My Thoughts on Villain’s Strategy
"Villain's Strategy" is a completed web novel that I found myself drawn into, despite some initial reservations. It's a blend of comedy, school life, and romance, with a dash of psychological elements thrown in. The premise is simple: a timid protagonist transmigrates into a villainous role and must complete tasks assigned by a system. What follows is a journey of self-discovery, unexpected friendships, and a slow-burn romance.
First Impressions
I was initially hesitant about the MC's timid nature. He stutters constantly and seems almost too cowardly. However, as I delved deeper, I realized that his timidity is a direct result of his difficult past. He's been bounced around between relatives after the death of his parents, learning to suppress his own needs to avoid causing trouble. It's this backstory that makes his character relatable and his occasional bursts of courage all the more impactful.
What Works Well
The humor in this novel is definitely a highlight. The banter between the MC and the system is comedy gold, and I often found myself laughing out loud at their interactions. The author also does a great job of portraying the complexities of family relationships. The ML's strained relationship with his parents, who prioritize career over family, adds depth to his character and explains his initial coldness. I particularly appreciated the author's stance on forgiveness – that family doesn't necessarily mean blood relations, and it's okay to walk away from toxic situations. The character development, particularly for the ML, is also well-executed, showing him grow from a cold, aloof character to someone capable of genuine affection.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the overall story, the romance development felt a bit rushed, especially towards the end. The transition from awkward acquaintances to lovers could have been fleshed out more, and some of the ML's actions early on raised some red flags. I also felt that the ML's internal struggles could have been explored in greater detail, and his dark moments weren't always resolved satisfactorily. Some found the ML's behavior bordering on non-consensual.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers may be sensitive to the ML's initial actions and behaviors. In early parts of the novel, he can be manipulative and cold, and some scenes may be triggering for those who are sensitive to depictions of power imbalances in relationships.
Final Verdict
Despite some minor pacing issues and questionable actions from the ML, "Villain's Strategy" is an enjoyable read. I would recommend it if you're looking for a lighthearted story with well-developed characters, plenty of humor, and a touch of romance. Just be prepared for a slightly uneven romance and some potentially triggering elements. It's a story about overcoming adversity, finding your own strength, and building meaningful connections, even in the most unexpected circumstances.
