My Thoughts on Skin
"Skin" is a danmei novel that really grabbed my attention, and I can see why it's earned such a strong following. It's a blend of crime investigation, psychological depth, and slow-burn romance that, for the most part, works incredibly well. I found myself drawn into the complex world Tan Shi created, and I was eager to unravel its mysteries.
First Impressions
The initial chapters were a bit slow to get into. The story focuses on Meng Zhao, a hot-tempered policeman, and Lu Shichen, an emotionally impaired financial consultant with amnesia, as they investigate a murder. I felt that the beginning chapters were a little tedious, focusing heavily on the investigation without enough character interaction to really hook me. However, I'm glad I stuck with it, because things definitely picked up.
What Works Well
The core of "Skin" lies in its characters and the intricate plot. Meng Zhao's strong sense of justice and Lu Shichen's emotional struggles create a compelling dynamic. The author’s writing style vividly portrays the scenes and immerses you in the story. The way the romance develops felt organic, despite Lu Shichen’s complicated personality, and the author does a great job of taking you through both characters' inner thoughts and struggles. I also appreciated the suspenseful, twisty plot, which kept me guessing until the very end. The author masterfully misleads the reader, making it difficult to predict the real culprit.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the overall story, I did find a few aspects somewhat problematic. Some of the themes explored, such as sexual abuse and child trafficking, can be triggering. I also felt that Meng Zhao can be a bit demanding in his relationship with Lu Shichen, creating an imbalance. The ending, while technically a happy one, also felt somewhat tragic, as justice is not fully served.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers have pointed out that the reason for involving the real perpetrator in the crime series seems illogical, and that ordinary citizens had to become monsters to reveal everything.
Final Verdict
Despite some minor flaws, "Skin" is a captivating read that blends mystery, romance, and psychological elements into a compelling narrative. The characters are well-developed, the plot is intricate, and the writing is immersive. If you're looking for a danmei novel with depth, suspense, and a touch of darkness, I would definitely recommend giving "Skin" a try. Just be prepared for some potentially triggering content and a bittersweet ending.
