Author profile

School-life romance lives or dies by its leads, and Wait For Me After School has two good ones. Yu Fan is the resident tough guy with a complete inability to admit he has feelings; Chen Jingshen is the kind of person who notices everything and uses that knowledge with quiet precision. He knows what he's doing. Yu Fan does not. The resulting dynamic is funny and oddly tender.

Yu Fan's internal monologue carries a lot of the book's charm. He is deeply, sincerely in denial about his own emotions, and his reasoning gets increasingly convoluted as the story progresses. Chen Jingshen's apparent perfection is given some actual weight by the backstory the author gradually reveals, which keeps him from being merely an idealized love interest.

The supporting cast works well too. The teacher Zhuang Fangqin is a genuinely caring presence rather than an obstacle or a punchline. Yu Fan's friends provide comedic relief without feeling like they exist solely for that purpose.

The pacing is deliberate. This is a story happy to sit with small moments, and some readers will find that meditative; others will find it slow. The bigger issue is the six-year separation in the latter portion of the story, which many readers found unnecessary. The angst around Yu Fan's father and Chen Jingshen's mother is more purposeful, though it's real angst, not light drama.

At 4.6, this deserves the rating for what it does well. The relationship at the center is written with enough specificity and emotional honesty that the slow pace mostly feels earned rather than padded.

Synopsis

Yu Fan didn’t like the sight of the new transfer student in his class. The other party glanced at him. Yu Fan: He’s looking for a fight. The second glance. Yu Fan: He’s asking if I’m scared. Third glance. The transfer student with his usual expressionless, iceberg-like face handed him a letter, “Classmate Yu.” Yu Fan internally felt that this top student is annoyingly fastidious, even handing out a letter of challenge to request for a fight. He proceeded to roll up his sleeves and stand up. “Please accept my love letter.” Classmate Yu immediately sat back down. >>Green tea top student gong x tsundere school tyrant shou
