My Thoughts on Ophiuchus

Ophiuchus is definitely a novel that knows what it is and isn't afraid to deliver. This is a self-indulgent read that dives headfirst into taboo territory, and if you're comfortable with that, you might find yourself enjoying the ride. I certainly did, for the most part.

First Impressions

Going in, I knew what I was getting into with the incest tag, but I was curious to see how the author would handle it. The initial setup is pretty straightforward: a younger brother shamelessly pursuing his cold, CEO-type older brother. The story wastes no time getting to the core of the relationship, and that's both a blessing and a curse.

What Works Well

What I appreciated most was the proactive shou. Yan Cenan knows what he wants, and he goes for it without excessive angst. The dynamic between him and Yan Xun is undeniably hot, and the smut is well-written and satisfying, if a little unbelievable at times (car scenes, anyone?). I also liked that the story doesn't dwell too much on the morality of their relationship, instead focusing on their connection and how they heal each other. The lack of unnecessary drama was a plus for me. The author focuses on the relationship between the two main characters and doesn't dwell on the lives of the side characters.

Areas of Concern

The biggest issue for me was the pacing and the lack of emotional depth. The story felt rushed, and the older brother's sudden change of heart felt unearned. I wanted to see more of a build-up, more internal conflict, and a better understanding of why Yan Xun fell for Yan Cenan. Without that, their relationship felt more like lust than love. Also, the ending felt abrupt, leaving me wanting more in terms of their family dynamics.

⚠️ Spoiler Warning

Several reviewers mentioned a specific scene in the car after the younger brother is kidnapped and drugged. It's a pivotal moment that seems to trigger the older brother's romantic feelings, but some found it to be a weak foundation for their relationship.

Final Verdict

Overall, Ophiuchus is a decent read if you're looking for a short, smutty, and taboo romance. Just be prepared for a lack of emotional depth and a rushed plot. It's a guilty pleasure that satisfies in the moment but might not leave a lasting impression. I'd give it a solid 3.5/5 stars.

Synopsis

『Ophiuchus is not included in the twelve constellations in astrology.』 “Do you know why I say you are Ophiuchus?” Yan Xun asked. “Because you hate me.” Yan Cenan said. “Wrong,” Yan Xun said coldly, “Ophiuchus is not recognized in the twelve signs, so you can only belong to me.” Yan Xun x Yan Cenan. Cold and detached gong x juvenile shou. 10-year age gap.
