My Thoughts on Brother
"Brother" is a novel that's been sitting on my TBR for a while, and after finally diving in, I can see why it evokes such strong reactions. This isn't a light read; it's a deep, often painful exploration of family, duty, and forbidden love set against the backdrop of a changing China. I went in expecting one thing, and came out with something else completely.
First Impressions
Initially, the premise—a story of incestuous love between brothers, one of whom has a mental disability—gave me pause. It felt like walking into potentially problematic territory. However, I was quickly drawn in by the compelling writing and the raw emotional honesty of the narrative. The author paints a vivid picture of the brothers' lives, making you feel their struggles and their joys with equal intensity.
What Works Well
The strength of "Brother" lies in its character development, particularly Xu Ping, the older brother. His internal conflict, his sense of responsibility, and his evolving feelings for his younger brother, Xu Zheng, are portrayed with nuance and depth. I found myself sympathizing with him, even when his choices were questionable. The novel also shines in its depiction of the historical context. The descriptions of China during a time of civil unrest, changing beliefs, and the rise of political parties add a layer of depth and realism to the story. The translation is also superb and really brings the story to life.

The novel is certainly not without its flaws. Some might find the sheer amount of tragedy piled onto Xu Ping's life a bit overwhelming. It sometimes feels like one misfortune after another, which can lead to a sense of numbness rather than empathy. Also, the dynamic of the relationship between the two brothers may be uncomfortable for some readers. It does delve into morally grey areas and may trigger some readers due to the sensitive topics it explores.
