My Thoughts on It Turns Out I’m Just Cannon Fodder in a Rich Family’s Story
This novel promises drama, romance, and revenge, all wrapped up in a modern fantasy setting. As someone who enjoys a good face-slapping story, I was eager to dive in. After considering a range of opinions, here's my take.
First Impressions
The initial chapters definitely grab your attention. I found myself immediately invested in the protagonist, Lin Zhiyu, and his plight. The setup is classic cannon fodder: wronged in a past life, reborn with a chance for vengeance. It's a familiar trope, but one that can be incredibly satisfying when done well.
What Works Well
I particularly enjoyed the dynamic between Lin Zhiyu and Xie You Zhou, the male lead. Several readers described him as a "wolfdog" type, and I can see why. He's fiercely devoted and undeniably powerful, and his unwavering support of the MC is a definite highlight. The romance, while slow-burn, does develop into something quite sweet. I appreciated the focus on both the characters' individual careers and their growing relationship. The revenge plot, while not solely executed by the MC, is ultimately fulfilling. The villains get their just desserts, which is always a plus.
Areas of Concern
While the overall story is enjoyable, I did find some aspects a bit lacking. Several readers pointed out that the characters, particularly the villains, can be somewhat two-dimensional. While their actions are certainly outrageous, I sometimes felt like they lacked depth and complexity. Additionally, the MC's active role in the revenge felt somewhat diminished by the ML's overwhelming power. It would have been nice to see Lin Zhiyu take a more active role in dismantling his enemies. Finally, while the plot is engaging, it can feel rushed at times, with certain sections glossed over.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
If you're sensitive to depictions of cruelty, particularly in the early chapters, proceed with caution. There are graphic descriptions that some readers found disturbing. Also, be aware that the ending for the main villain, Ruan Jiaojiao, may not be as satisfying as some readers would like.
Final Verdict
It Turns Out I’m Just Cannon Fodder in a Rich Family’s Story is a decent read if you're looking for a quick and engaging revenge story with a devoted love interest. While it may not be the most groundbreaking novel, it offers a satisfying dose of drama and romance. I'd recommend it for those who enjoy the genre and are willing to overlook some of the shortcomings in character development and plot execution. I give it a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars.
