My Thoughts on Bastard Male Wife
"Bastard Male Wife" is definitely a unique title that grabbed my attention, and after diving in, I can see why it's garnered a dedicated following, even if it's not without its flaws. This historical yaoi with arranged marriage and reincarnation elements promised a captivating story, and for the most part, it delivered.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the premise of a reborn protagonist, Xie Tingyue, navigating ancient times with a cheat in the form of a magical book passed down from a legendary businessman ancestor. The early chapters set the stage for a potentially intricate plot filled with mysteries surrounding Xie Tingyue and his husband, Chu Yu.
What Works Well
I found the character development to be a strong point. Each character has a distinct personality, and the slow-burn romance between Xie Tingyue and Chu Yu felt genuine and earned. I appreciated that Chu Yu was portrayed as protective and attentive, even when facing his own health issues. The depiction of customs and traditions also felt well-researched and added depth to the world-building. I agree that the relationship development was beautiful, progressing naturally as the MC and ML got to know each other.
Areas of Concern
However, I have to admit, the plot can get confusing at times. The author clearly aimed for complexity, but it occasionally felt like too many threads were introduced without proper resolution. The pacing, particularly towards the end, felt rushed, leading to an anticlimactic resolution of major plot points. I can see how this would frustrate some readers, as all the build-up deserved a more fleshed-out conclusion. Some also found the initial dialogue and actions of the MC unbelievable.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Several reviews mentioned specific plot points that could be considered spoilers. For example, the true identities of Xie Tingyue and Chu Yu, as well as the details surrounding the antagonists' plans, are best discovered organically while reading.
Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "Bastard Male Wife" offered an enjoyable reading experience. The intriguing plot, well-developed characters, and sweet romance made it worthwhile, even if the ending felt somewhat truncated. If you're a fan of historical yaoi with a touch of mystery and don't mind a few plot holes, I'd recommend giving this one a try. Just be prepared for a slightly bumpy ride towards the finish line.
