My Thoughts on I’m a Family Doctor in a Domineering Boss Novel
"I’m a Family Doctor in a Domineering Boss Novel" is quite the ride! I went in expecting a lighthearted comedy, and while it definitely delivers on the humor, it's also packed with so much more. This novel is a parody of all those domineering CEO tropes we've seen a million times, but with a unique spin that kept me thoroughly entertained.
First Impressions
The premise is immediately engaging: a kind, cat-loving doctor who just wants to live a normal life finds himself constantly embroiled in the chaotic love lives and family dramas of his wealthy clients. The early chapters are a whirlwind of outlandish scenarios and quirky characters. I felt like I was watching a train wreck in slow motion, but in the best possible way.
What Works Well
The humor is definitely the strongest aspect of this novel. The MC's obliviousness to the romantic tension around him is hilarious, and the side characters are simply outrageous. I especially loved the strong female characters, who aren't afraid to stand up for themselves and often steal the show. The author does a fantastic job of creating unique and memorable personalities, even for minor roles. The main relationship between the MC and ML is a slow burn, but I found it incredibly satisfying. The ML's "green tea" tendencies are played for laughs, and the butler is an absolute gem, constantly calling him out on his antics.
Areas of Concern
I can see how some readers might find the sheer volume of drama overwhelming. There are so many couples and storylines that it can be difficult to keep track of everything. Also, some of the tropes, particularly the ones involving power imbalances and questionable ethics, might not be to everyone's taste. There's a fine line between satire and glorification, and I think the novel occasionally teeters on that edge. Additionally, the focus on side characters can overshadow the main couple at times, making their relationship feel a bit underdeveloped in comparison.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers have pointed out potentially triggering content in the first few arcs, including instances of forced affection and manipulation. The second couple involves a stepmother-stepson relationship with a small age gap, which may make some readers uncomfortable. The third couple has some readers feeling as if they want the MC to join their family in a non-platonic way.
Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, I found "I’m a Family Doctor in a Domineering Boss Novel" to be an incredibly fun and addictive read. If you're looking for a lighthearted comedy with plenty of drama, quirky characters, and a healthy dose of satire, this might be right up your alley. Just be prepared for a wild ride! I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
