My Thoughts on After the Secrets of the Passerby Were Leaked, He Was Cherished by the Entire Family of Antagonists
"After the Secrets of the Passerby Were Leaked, He Was Cherished by the Entire Family of Antagonists" is quite the mouthful, and after diving in, I found the story itself to be just as packed! This novel blends comedy, drama, fantasy, and romance (specifically yaoi) into a unique and often hilarious experience, but it's not without its quirks.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the premise of a carefree protagonist who becomes the adopted darling of a family of "antagonists." The early chapters are genuinely funny, with a focus on lighthearted "melon eating" – essentially, enjoying the unfolding drama of others. The family dynamic is definitely a strong point, and I quickly grew to love the doting older siblings and the overall wholesome atmosphere.
What Works Well
The humor is definitely a highlight. The story satirizes common tropes found in book-transmigration and entertainment circle novels, and the MC's reactions to the ridiculousness are often spot-on. I also appreciate the way the author mixes different novel worlds, creating a believable and amusing setting where ABO elements can coexist with more realistic scenarios. The MC isn't a genius, which is refreshing; instead, he's more of a gossip magnet, which leads to plenty of entertaining situations. Many readers seem to agree that the first portion of the novel is a blast.
Areas of Concern
However, as I progressed, I noticed a recurring theme that became increasingly problematic: the gleeful enjoyment of others' misfortunes. While some "face-slapping" moments are satisfying, the constant pursuit of gossip, even when it involves sensitive issues, started to feel uncomfortable.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Several reviewers have specifically called out the way the novel handles a side character's eating disorder (or disordered eating). The character is mocked for her behavior, and it's presented as a flaw in her persona rather than a potential health issue. This insensitivity significantly detracted from my enjoyment. Additionally, some found the ending to be abrupt and tonally inconsistent with the rest of the story, introducing elements like time travel and wings that felt out of place.
Final Verdict
"After the Secrets of the Passerby Were Leaked, He Was Cherished by the Entire Family of Antagonists" is a mixed bag. It's undeniably funny and heartwarming at times, with a strong family dynamic and clever satire. However, the repetitive nature of the plot, the questionable handling of sensitive topics, and the divisive ending ultimately prevent me from giving it a wholehearted recommendation. If you enjoy lighthearted comedy and can overlook its flaws, you might find it entertaining, but be aware of the potential pitfalls.
