My Thoughts on I Have Medicine
"I Have Medicine" is a web novel that I found myself completely engrossed in, despite its intimidating length. This xianxia story, with its generous helping of shounen ai, definitely earns its spot on my "favorites" shelf. I will say that you should be prepared for a slow burn, but I personally found it to be worth the wait.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the world-building. The author has crafted a rich and detailed universe that unfolds gradually, keeping me invested chapter after chapter. The premise, a modern-day individual transmigrating into a cultivation world with a system, isn't entirely novel, but the execution felt fresh and engaging. I found myself quickly attached to both the MC, Gu Zuo, and the ML, Gongyi Tianheng.
What Works Well
The dynamic between Gu Zuo and Tianheng is definitely a highlight. The relationship develops organically, progressing from a business arrangement to a deep, supportive bond. I appreciated the slow burn of their romance. It felt realistic, watching their feelings evolve over time. I also really enjoyed the complementary nature of their skillsets. Gu Zuo's talents as a pharmacist perfectly support Tianheng's strength as a martial artist, making them a formidable team. Some might find the MC's reliance on the ML a drawback, but I saw it as a testament to their trust and interdependence. The story also shines in its ability to weave together various elements. Elements introduced early on reappear later, creating a cohesive and satisfying narrative. The side characters were also well-developed and memorable, adding depth to the overall world.
Areas of Concern
While I personally enjoyed the slow-burn romance, I can see how some readers might find it too gradual. There are also some valid criticisms regarding the MC's perceived naivete, especially in the early chapters. However, I felt that Gu Zuo's character developed significantly throughout the story, and his initial naivete was understandable given his background and age. Some readers may also find themselves craving more action or a faster-paced plot.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers may want to skip this section to avoid spoilers.
One thing that really stood out to me was the arc where Tianheng is stranded in space. Gu Zuo's reaction, issuing bounties on the attacker's family, was a powerful moment that showcased the depth of his feelings and his willingness to protect those he cares about.
Final Verdict
Overall, "I Have Medicine" is a delightful and engaging read. While the slow-burn romance and occasional pacing issues might not appeal to everyone, I found the rich world-building, compelling characters, and satisfying plot to be well worth the investment. If you're a fan of xianxia novels with a focus on character development and a sweet, slow-burn romance, I highly recommend giving this one a try.
