My Thoughts on When He Comes, Close Your Eyes
"When He Comes, Close Your Eyes" promised a blend of psychological suspense and romance, and after diving in, I can see why it's garnered such a dedicated following. It's a unique mix, and while it doesn't hit every note perfectly, the overall experience is definitely compelling.
First Impressions
Right off the bat, the synopsis intrigued me. A high-IQ, low-EQ criminal psychologist and a smart, observant female lead? Sign me up! The initial chapters paint Bo Jinyan as aloof and even a bit creepy, but it's clear there's more beneath the surface. I was immediately drawn into the mysteries surrounding him and eager to see how his relationship with Jian Yao would develop.
What Works Well
The core strength of this novel lies in its characters. Professor Bo Jinyan is a fascinating protagonist – arrogant, unconventional, and surprisingly endearing as his shell begins to crack. I loved watching his interactions with Jian Yao, which start off awkward but gradually blossom into a genuinely sweet and humorous romance. The author does a great job of balancing the darker elements of the crime investigations with the lighter, more intimate moments between the leads. The mysteries themselves are intriguing and well-researched, pulling you into the world of forensic psychology. I found myself trying to piece together the clues alongside the characters, which made the reading experience all the more engaging. The cases are definitely a highlight, pushing the characters and the reader to the edge of their seats.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the romance overall, I can see why some readers wanted more. There were moments where the development felt rushed, and I would have appreciated more focus on the characters' emotional growth. Also, while Jian Yao is a likable character, at times her personality seemed to shift to fit the needs of the plot, making her feel a bit inconsistent. I also felt that the author could have explored Bo Jinyan's past more deeply. Some plot points were left unresolved, leaving me with lingering questions.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers felt that the novel portrayed a kidnapping and drugging of the female lead unrealistically. They point out that the lack of lasting trauma seemed out of character. Also, one of the side stories contains content that some readers found distasteful and out of character.
Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "When He Comes, Close Your Eyes" is a worthwhile read. The unique blend of crime, suspense, and romance, coupled with the compelling characters, makes it a novel that will keep you hooked until the very end. While it might not be perfect, it's certainly entertaining and memorable. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for something a little different in the world of web novels.
