My Thoughts on Don’t Turn from Summer
"Don't Turn from Summer" is a complex and emotionally charged novel that really took me on a rollercoaster ride. It's a mature romance set against the backdrop of the business world, with a focus on personal growth and the challenges of maintaining a relationship amidst ambition and adversity. While it has its flaws, the story ultimately resonated with me, and I found myself invested in the journeys of the two main characters.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the premise of a smart, hardworking female lead and a ruthless, intelligent male lead navigating the cutthroat world of business. I was eager to see how their relationship would develop and how they would balance their personal lives with their professional aspirations. The initial chapters hooked me with their interesting plot.
What Works Well
I found the character development to be a major strength of this novel, particularly the female lead's journey. She starts as an ordinary woman and evolves into a strong, independent individual who is not afraid to pursue her dreams. Her ambition and resilience are inspiring, and I appreciated that she wasn't portrayed as unrealistically perfect. I also enjoyed how the author explores the nuances of their relationship, highlighting the misunderstandings and sacrifices they both make along the way. The author's exploration of the business world is also well-done, and I found the strategic maneuvering and competitive dynamics to be engaging. The business passion of the protagonists, how they operate start-ups from scratch and their clever ways of eliminating rivals was interesting.
Areas of Concern
I did find the male lead to be somewhat problematic, especially in the early parts of the story. His arrogance and coldness can be off-putting, and at times, he seems to prioritize his own ambitions over the female lead's feelings. Also, the time skip was unnecessary. It was a letdown that all the male lead had to do was crook his finger and she was back in his bed. The only thing that changed was, she got an education.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers expressed concerns about the male lead's infidelity and how easily the female lead seemed to forgive him. This is a valid criticism, as cheating is a serious issue, and the way it's handled in the story may not sit well with all readers.
Final Verdict
Overall, I found "Don't Turn from Summer" to be a worthwhile read. While the male lead's character and the handling of certain plot points may be divisive, the female lead's growth, the exploration of ambition and relationships, and the engaging business backdrop make it a compelling story. If you're looking for a mature romance with complex characters and a realistic portrayal of the challenges of life and love, I would recommend giving this novel a try.
