My Thoughts on When A Snail Loves
"When A Snail Loves" certainly surprised me. The title initially gave me the impression of a saccharine, slow-paced romance, but what I found was a compelling blend of crime investigation and character-driven romance. While the romance is definitely present, it's cleverly interwoven with intriguing cases and psychological insights.
First Impressions
I was immediately drawn to the main characters, Xu Xu and Ji Bai. Xu Xu, the "snail" of the title, is a brilliant criminal profiler with a lower EQ, making her adorably oblivious at times. Ji Bai, on the other hand, is a direct and sensible detective who respects Xu Xu's opinions and gives her space to grow. Their dynamic felt refreshing, especially the way they balanced their feelings with their professional duties.
What Works Well
The author does an excellent job of fleshing out each character, and I especially appreciated the emphasis on relationship building. It's not just about the romance between the leads; the interactions between Xu Xu and her brother, and the development of the side characters, add depth to the story. I found the crime scenes to be vividly illustrated, and the way the characters cracked the cases was genuinely ingenious. The author paints a merciful world where characters are given second chances to rectify their wrongs.
Areas of Concern
One aspect that was a bit jarring for me was the initial description of Xu Xu. She's often portrayed as plain or even unattractive, especially compared to the "god-like" perfection of Ji Bai. While I appreciate that the story doesn't rely on conventional beauty standards, the constant comparisons felt unnecessary and a bit undermining to Xu Xu's character.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers may find the shift in focus towards Yao Meng and the darker elements of the story in the later chapters a bit jarring. While I personally enjoyed Yao Meng's arc and her eventual happy ending, it did feel like the main couple took a bit of a backseat. There were also some concerns about loose ends, such as the fate of Zhang Shiyong, which left me wanting more closure.
Final Verdict
Despite some minor flaws, "When A Snail Loves" is a well-written and engaging novel. The blend of crime, psychology, and romance is expertly done, and the characters are both relatable and compelling. I'd definitely recommend it if you're looking for a story that offers more than just a simple romance, and if you appreciate a slow-burn relationship that develops naturally alongside a thrilling plot.
