My Thoughts on Undead
"Undead" is a wild ride, a danmei novel that throws you headfirst into a zombie apocalypse with an ABO twist. I went in expecting the usual tropes, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. It's not perfect, but the action, the characters, and the unique blend of genres kept me hooked.
First Impressions
The initial setup is strong. Our MC wakes up with amnesia amidst a zombie outbreak and quickly proves he's not your typical damsel-in-distress Omega. Right away, the story establishes a fast pace, throwing the reader into intense action sequences alongside the ML's special forces unit. I was immediately intrigued by the mystery surrounding the MC's past and the overall apocalyptic world.
What Works Well
The characters are definitely a highlight. The MC is a badass, capable Omega who can hold his own, which subverts the usual Omegaverse tropes. I appreciated that he wasn't just a "special Omega" but a well-rounded character with vulnerabilities and quirks. The ML is also a refreshing change from the typical cold, overbearing Alpha. He's witty, charismatic, and genuinely cares for his team, creating a dynamic that's both humorous and heartwarming.
The action scenes are also fantastic. They're thrilling and well-written, making you feel the intensity of fighting for survival in a zombie-infested world. What I also liked was that the author let the story explore humanity in the face of despair.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the overall plot, I do have a few minor gripes. Some readers might find the religious allusions a bit cringy, although they are infrequent. Also, the main conflict can feel anticlimactic compared to the high-intensity action throughout the story. Some may find the ABO aspect superficial and not fully integrated into the plot.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some users have pointed out that the novel contains child ab*se, which may be triggering for some readers. This is described in the backstory of the main character.
Final Verdict
Despite some minor flaws, "Undead" is a thoroughly enjoyable read. The strong characters, thrilling action, and unique blend of genres make it stand out in the crowded web novel landscape. If you're a fan of danmei, zombie apocalypses, and strong protagonists, I highly recommend giving this one a try. I'd rate it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
