My Thoughts on 2013
"2013" is quite the ride! This apocalyptic BL novel definitely left an impression, though not always a consistently positive one. It's a story that grabs you by the collar and plunges you into a world overrun by zombies, forcing you to confront not just survival, but also complex relationships and moral dilemmas.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the promise of a unique take on the zombie apocalypse genre. The concept of ex-boyfriends reuniting amidst chaos, with one being brains and the other brawn, felt like a refreshing spin. I was definitely eager to see how their relationship would evolve. The early chapters are strong, immersing you in the gritty reality of survival.
What Works Well
The world-building is undeniably a strong point. The author's attention to detail really shines, raising scientific, political, and philosophical questions that elevate the story beyond simple zombie-slaying. I found myself pondering the collapse of morality and the value of life in such a brutal setting. The main couple, Liu Yan and Meng Feng, are compelling. Their bickering dynamic, while not always conventionally romantic, felt realistic and their devotion to each other was clear, even without grand gestures. Many readers praised the solid plot and intriguing cast. The action is well-paced, and the stakes feel genuinely high.
Areas of Concern
One aspect that seems to divide readers is the secondary couple. The age gap and unconventional nature of their relationship made some readers, including myself, deeply uncomfortable. It's definitely a trigger for some, and I think it's fair to say that the handling of this relationship could have been more sensitive. Some found the plot to be disjointed, with elements that felt unrealistic or unexplained. Others felt that the ending was rushed.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some reviews discuss plot points and character fates, so proceed with caution if you want to avoid spoilers.
Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, I believe "2013" is a worthwhile read for those who enjoy apocalyptic fiction with a strong focus on character relationships. It's not a perfect novel, and the controversial secondary relationship may be a deal-breaker for some. However, if you're looking for a thought-provoking and emotionally charged story with well-developed leads and a unique take on the genre, "2013" might just surprise you. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars, with the caveat to be aware of the potential triggers before diving in.
