My Thoughts on To Be a Power in the Shadows! (WN)

I dove into "To Be a Power in the Shadows!" with a healthy dose of curiosity, and I've come out the other side with quite a few thoughts. This web novel is definitely... something. It's a wild ride that blends action, comedy, and fantasy in a way that's both incredibly entertaining and, at times, utterly baffling.

First Impressions

Initially, I was hooked by the premise. The idea of a protagonist who's convinced he's living out a chuunibyou fantasy, only for it to actually be real, is comedy gold. The early chapters had me laughing out loud. It's a unique twist on the isekai genre, and I appreciated the author's willingness to lean into the absurdity.

What Works Well

The humor is definitely the strongest aspect of this novel. The misunderstandings, the coincidences, and the MC's sheer obliviousness all combine to create a consistently funny experience. It's a parody of power fantasies, and it executes that parody with surprising skill. The action sequences are also well-done, providing a nice counterpoint to the comedic elements. The supporting characters, particularly the members of Shadow Garden, are also surprisingly well-developed. They each have their own distinct personalities and motivations, which makes them more than just generic harem members.

Areas of Concern

However, the novel isn't without its flaws. The biggest issue, for me, is the repetitive nature of the jokes. The "MC is dumb but accidentally succeeds" gag gets old after a while, and it can make the story feel stale. I also found the MC's denseness to be frustrating at times. While it's played for laughs, it can be hard to believe that he's that clueless. Some readers may also be turned off by the harem elements, which can feel forced and unnecessary.

⚠️ Spoiler Warning

Some readers have expressed frustration with the MC's actions in later arcs, particularly his treatment of his followers. There are moments where he seems to prioritize his own amusement over their well-being, which can make him come across as selfish and unlikeable.

Final Verdict

Overall, "To Be a Power in the Shadows!" is a fun and entertaining read, but it's not without its problems. If you're looking for a lighthearted comedy with plenty of action and a unique premise, you'll probably enjoy it. However, if you're easily annoyed by dense protagonists or repetitive jokes, you might want to steer clear. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars. It's a flawed gem, but a gem nonetheless.

Synopsis

Just like how everyone adores heroes in their childhood, a certain boy adored those who hid in the shadows. One day, after living the mediocre life of a side character while undergoing frenzied training by night, he reincarnates in a different world and gains ultimate power. The young man who is only playing at being a secretive powerhouse, his misunderstanding subordinates, and a struggling, giant, shadowy organization… This is the story of a boy who adored shadowy manipulations who might possibly reign over the dark side of another world.
