My Thoughts on To Be a Power in the Shadows! (LN)
First Impressions
"To Be a Power in the Shadows!" definitely grabbed my attention with its unique premise. An isekai story centered around a protagonist obsessed with being a "shadowbroker" type character? I was immediately intrigued. The blend of action, comedy, and fantasy seemed like a recipe for a fun and engaging read. I went in expecting something over-the-top and a little ridiculous, and I wasn't disappointed.
What Works Well
The biggest draw for me is undoubtedly Cid, the main character. His complete dedication to his chuunibyou fantasies, coupled with his genuine OP abilities, creates a hilarious and compelling dynamic. The misunderstandings that arise from his actions are pure comedic gold, and I found myself constantly laughing at the absurdity of the situations he gets into. Many readers seem to agree that the humor and the unique way the author moves the story along keep it from getting boring, even with an overpowered protagonist. The side characters, especially those in Shadow Garden, are also quite memorable, each possessing unique quirks and contributing to the overall charm of the story. Several reviewers also praise the unique premise and comedic scenes.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the series, I can see where some criticisms come from. Cid's denseness can be frustrating at times, especially when it comes to the feelings and well-being of those around him. Some readers found the plot to be convoluted, with too many elements vying for attention. I also understand the complaints about the villains sometimes feeling bland and repetitive. While the series excels at comedy, it could benefit from more depth in certain areas.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some reviewers mentioned specific plot points and character developments, so be cautious if you want to go in completely blind. One reviewer noted the old hero prophecy matching Cid's blabbering, while another questioned Zeta's actions in the fifth volume.
Final Verdict
Overall, I found "To Be a Power in the Shadows!" to be a highly entertaining and enjoyable read. While it has its flaws, the unique premise, hilarious protagonist, and engaging side characters make it a worthwhile experience. If you're looking for a lighthearted and over-the-top isekai with plenty of action and comedy, I'd definitely recommend giving this one a try. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
