My Thoughts on The Return of Cambrian Period
"The Return of Cambrian Period" throws you headfirst into a world grappling with a sudden and chaotic resurgence of prehistoric energies. It's a wild ride that blends sci-fi, action, and a touch of the supernatural, all wrapped up in a BL romance. I found myself quickly drawn in by the sheer scope of the story and the unique premise.
First Impressions
Initially, I was hooked by the apocalyptic setting, but a little unsure of the main character, Cong Xia. He starts as a pretty ordinary office worker, and some readers found him to be a bit weak-willed. However, I appreciated that he wasn't immediately a superhero. His growth throughout the story is a definite highlight, and I ended up really rooting for him.
What Works Well
The world-building is fantastic! The author has clearly put a lot of thought into the Cambrian resurgence and its effects on the world. The plot is intricate, with mysteries unfolding gradually, keeping you guessing. I particularly enjoyed the dynamic between Cong Xia and Cheng Tianbi, the stoic soldier. Their romance is a slow burn, which I personally prefer, and their relationship evolves naturally alongside the main plot. Also, the supporting characters are well-developed and feel like a real team, each with their own quirks and backstories.
Areas of Concern
While I ultimately enjoyed Cong Xia's character development, I can understand why some readers found him frustrating early on. His initial naivete might not appeal to everyone. Also, the plot can get a little convoluted at times, with a large cast of characters and numerous subplots. This complexity might be overwhelming for some readers, though I felt it ultimately added to the richness of the story.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers expressed frustration with specific plot points and character decisions, particularly concerning the villain and the handling of certain situations. For example, the strategic choices made by the main characters in dealing with a particularly problematic scientist were criticized. If you're sensitive to characters making choices you disagree with, be aware that this might be an issue for you.
Final Verdict
Despite some minor pacing issues and the initial impression of the main character, "The Return of Cambrian Period" is a compelling and imaginative novel. The blend of apocalyptic action, intricate plot, and slow-burn romance makes it a worthwhile read. If you're a fan of the genre and appreciate character development, I definitely recommend giving it a try. I'm glad I stuck with it, and I think you will be too.
