My Thoughts on The Elegant Dancing Years
"The Elegant Dancing Years" is definitely a novel that leaves a lasting impression, though whether that impression is positive or negative seems to depend heavily on individual preferences and tolerance for certain themes. This book is a wild ride.
First Impressions
Going into this novel, I was immediately struck by the unusual premise: reincarnation, ancient China, and a relationship with the Emperor, who also happens to be the MC's father. It's a lot to take in, and I knew going in that I'd be either hooked or completely turned off. The initial chapters do a decent job of setting the stage, but there's a definite lack of detailed world-building early on. I found myself wanting more information about the MC's past life and the intricacies of this new world he's been thrust into.
What Works Well
Despite the potentially problematic themes, I can see why some readers are drawn to this story. The taboo nature of the relationship between the MC and the ML is certainly a draw for some, and the author seems to walk a fine line between the morally questionable and the genuinely compelling. I appreciate that the novel doesn't shy away from the complexities of their dynamic, and the slow burn of their relationship, with the first intimate encounters occurring when the MC is older, helps to mitigate some of the discomfort.
