My Thoughts on The Elegant Dancing Years
"The Elegant Dancing Years" is definitely a novel that leaves a lasting impression, though whether that impression is positive or negative seems to depend heavily on individual preferences and tolerance for certain themes. This book is a wild ride.
First Impressions
Going into this novel, I was immediately struck by the unusual premise: reincarnation, ancient China, and a relationship with the Emperor, who also happens to be the MC's father. It's a lot to take in, and I knew going in that I'd be either hooked or completely turned off. The initial chapters do a decent job of setting the stage, but there's a definite lack of detailed world-building early on. I found myself wanting more information about the MC's past life and the intricacies of this new world he's been thrust into.
What Works Well
Despite the potentially problematic themes, I can see why some readers are drawn to this story. The taboo nature of the relationship between the MC and the ML is certainly a draw for some, and the author seems to walk a fine line between the morally questionable and the genuinely compelling. I appreciate that the novel doesn't shy away from the complexities of their dynamic, and the slow burn of their relationship, with the first intimate encounters occurring when the MC is older, helps to mitigate some of the discomfort. I also enjoyed the focus on court intrigue and power struggles, which added another layer of depth to the story beyond the central romance.
Areas of Concern
However, there are definitely aspects of this novel that gave me pause. The Emperor's harem and the occasional instances of non-consensual behavior made me uneasy, and I struggled to fully invest in a relationship that felt inherently unequal. I also found the characterization to be somewhat inconsistent at times. Both the MC and the ML are described as "ruthless and calculating," but I didn't always see those traits reflected in their actions. The plot can also feel contrived, with characters acting out of character to move the story forward.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers may be sensitive to the following plot points:
- The story contains elements of in\est and shota\on, which may be triggering for some readers.
- The ML engages in s\*xual activity with other characters before committing to the MC.
- There are instances of attempted poisoning and other forms of violence.
Final Verdict
Overall, "The Elegant Dancing Years" is a complex and controversial novel that won't appeal to everyone. If you're willing to look past the taboo themes and occasional plot contrivances, you might find yourself drawn into the intricate relationships and power struggles within the story. However, if you're easily offended by morally ambiguous characters or uncomfortable with potentially problematic content, this might not be the book for you. I'd give it a cautious recommendation, with the caveat that readers should be aware of the potentially triggering content before diving in.
