My Thoughts on Please Be More Serious
"Please Be More Serious" promised a sweet and lighthearted romance, and for the most part, it delivered. I found myself drawn into the story of the cold, workaholic male lead and the cheerful, free-spirited female lead. The premise of opposites attracting is a classic, and this novel puts its own charming spin on it.
First Impressions
Initially, I was captivated by the unique perspective – the story is told primarily from the male lead's point of view. This offered a refreshing change from the typical romance narratives I'm used to, and I found it fascinating to witness his transformation as he falls for the female lead. The beginning felt a bit slow, with detailed narration, but I was willing to stick with it, hoping for a heartwarming payoff.
What Works Well
The core strength of this novel lies in the relationship between the two leads. I enjoyed watching their awkward interactions blossom into genuine affection. The female lead's infectious positivity and the male lead's gradual softening created a delightful dynamic. I also appreciated that the female lead wasn't portrayed as an airhead; her cheerfulness felt refreshing and genuine. The novel avoids overly dramatic plotlines, opting instead for a slice-of-life feel that emphasizes the beauty in everyday moments. The author did a great job of contrasting the leads' personalities, highlighting how they bring out the best in each other.
Areas of Concern
Unfortunately, there's a significant issue that I need to address: the translation. While the translation quality itself is generally good, the translator's frequent and often sarcastic commentary inserted directly into the text is incredibly distracting. It disrupted my immersion in the story and often felt condescending. I understand that translators sometimes add notes, but the sheer volume and tone of these remarks detracted from the overall reading experience. It's a real shame, because the underlying story is quite enjoyable.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some reviews mention specific plot points, such as the male lead's initial view of marriage as a business proposal and the female lead's background as a "young miss." Also, the couple faces a problem at the end regarding their relationship and how it will work. If you prefer to go in completely blind, proceed with caution.
Final Verdict
"Please Be More Serious" is a sweet and heartwarming romance with an engaging premise and lovable characters. However, the intrusive translation significantly hinders the reading experience. If you can overlook or somehow filter out the translator's commentary, you'll likely find this novel to be a delightful and fluffy read. Otherwise, proceed with caution.
