My Thoughts on Picking up Attributes in the Apocalypse
Okay, so I dove into "Picking up Attributes in the Apocalypse" with some decent expectations, given the premise. Post-apocalyptic worlds and attribute-collecting systems? Sounds like a recipe for some good action and progression. However, my experience ended up being a mixed bag, to say the least.
First Impressions
The initial chapters definitely hooked me. A world ravaged by zombies, a weak-to-strong protagonist, and the promise of a cool system – it all seemed promising. The whole idea of picking up attributes from fallen enemies was a fun concept, and I was eager to see how the MC would utilize it to climb the ranks.
What Works Well
The system itself is probably the strongest aspect of the novel. The idea of absorbing abilities and leveling them up offers a lot of potential for creative power development. I can see why some readers enjoyed this aspect; it provides a clear path for the protagonist's growth and allows for some satisfying power-ups. The early stages of the apocalypse setting also held some appeal, offering a glimpse into the struggles of humanity's survival.
Areas of Concern
Unfortunately, the novel stumbled quite a bit as I progressed. My biggest issue lies in the world-building, or rather, the lack thereof. While it's labeled as an apocalypse story, it quickly devolves into something more akin to a generic modern fantasy with sects, schools, and young master tropes. It feels like the apocalypse is just a backdrop, barely influencing the current society.
The protagonist's actions and motivations also left me feeling somewhat disconnected. There were instances where his behavior felt jarring and out of place, which impacted my ability to fully invest in his journey. Plus, the pacing felt off at times, with the MC hoarding resources instead of strategically using them to enhance his abilities.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
I'm going to briefly touch on a potentially sensitive topic. Some readers have pointed out a disturbing scene involving sexual assault and the protagonist's reaction to it. This is a serious issue and understandably led to many readers dropping the novel.
Final Verdict
"Picking up Attributes in the Apocalypse" had the potential to be a great read, but ultimately fell short. While the system itself is interesting, the weak world-building, questionable character actions, and pacing issues significantly detract from the overall experience. If you're looking for a truly immersive post-apocalyptic story, this might not be it. I'd give it a cautious 2.5/5.
