My Thoughts on The Desolate Era
"The Desolate Era" is a xianxia novel that I dove into with a mix of excitement and trepidation, knowing IET's reputation. While it didn't completely blow me away, it definitely had its moments, and I can see why it's popular.
First Impressions
The initial chapters grabbed me. Ji Ning's journey from a sickly Earthling to a cultivator in a mystical world is compelling. I appreciated the early focus on his family and clan, which gave the story a grounded feel. The world-building also felt richer than in some similar novels, drawing on Chinese mythology in a way that felt authentic.
What Works Well
Many readers praised Ji Ning as a protagonist, and I agree he's a solid character. He's generally level-headed, loyal, and intelligent, which makes him easy to root for. The action scenes are also a strong point. They're well-written and engaging, and I enjoyed the creative use of Dao domains in combat. The earlier parts of the story, where the focus is tighter and the stakes feel personal, are definitely the strongest. I also appreciated the translation quality, which made the story flow smoothly.

As the story progressed, I felt a familiar xianxia pitfall creeping in: power creep. The scale of the world and Ji Ning's power levels escalate rapidly, which can make it hard to stay invested. I noticed several reviewers mentioned that the plot becomes repetitive, with the focus shifting to endless power progression and revenge quests. The side characters, while initially promising, tend to fade into the background as Ji Ning's power grows, which is a shame. The romance is also a bit of a letdown. It starts off promising but ultimately feels rushed and uninspired.
