My Thoughts on Ore no Ongaeshi: High Spec Murazukuri (WN)
"Ore no Ongaeshi: High Spec Murazukuri" is a web novel that I approached with cautious optimism, given its isekai tag and village-building premise. After diving in, I found myself with mixed feelings. It’s a story with some definite strengths, but also some noticeable weaknesses that keep it from reaching its full potential.
First Impressions
Initially, the story grabbed my attention. The protagonist, Yamato, being transported to another world and immediately assessing the situation rather than panicking was a refreshing change. I appreciated the attempt to ground him and give him a logical approach to survival. However, as I progressed, I couldn’t shake the feeling that the story was treading familiar ground.
What Works Well
One aspect I genuinely enjoyed was the blend of world-building, village management, and the integration of modern knowledge. The slice-of-life elements were well-detailed, allowing me to visualize the advancements and cultural exchanges happening within the village. I also found the protagonist to be reasonably likable, not a complete doormat, and his knowledge, while convenient, was somewhat justified by his background. The action scenes, though infrequent, were also well-written and engaging.
Areas of Concern
However, I did encounter several issues that dampened my enthusiasm. The pacing felt uneven at times, and some plot points seemed a little too convenient. The MC's supposed "denseness" regarding the affections of those around him also felt like a tired trope. Furthermore, the over-reliance on Japanese culture and technology felt a bit forced and detracted from the world-building. Some inconsistencies also became apparent, which, while minor individually, accumulated and became distracting. The biggest issue, for me, was the intelligence of the villagers who are starving right next to a field of rice.
