My Thoughts on Seiun wo Kakeru

"Seiun wo Kakeru" presents a unique blend of slice-of-life and industrialization in a bronze age setting, and I found myself intrigued by the premise. It follows a modern-day blacksmith who, after losing his memories, finds himself in a less technologically advanced era and uses his skills to improve the lives of those around him. While the overall rating is good, there are definitely some things to consider before diving in.

First Impressions

The initial chapters grabbed my attention with the mystery surrounding the protagonist's past and the unique opportunity to witness the introduction of modern techniques into a primitive society. The early romance also added a sweet touch, making me eager to see how the relationship would develop.

What Works Well

Many readers, including myself, appreciated the focus on crafting and the detailed descriptions of blacksmithing techniques. The slow, deliberate pace allowed for a relaxing read, focusing on the small, everyday improvements the protagonist brought to the village. Several people mentioned how well-developed the characters felt, even those with brief appearances, adding depth to the world. I also found the initial premise of a skilled individual using their knowledge for the betterment of a community quite appealing.

Areas of Concern

However, some aspects left me wanting more. A recurring criticism revolves around the world-building, with some finding the political and societal structures unrealistic. The scale of the villages and the feudal system apparently clashes with the population sizes, requiring a significant suspension of disbelief. I also noticed a few readers mentioning a lack of character depth, particularly with the heroine being perceived as overly emotional and jealous. The pacing, while initially appealing, can become monotonous for some, with conflicts being resolved too quickly and lacking significant impact.

⚠️ Spoiler Warning

Some readers have pointed out potential issues with the protagonist's decision-making, suggesting he introduces modern technologies without fully considering the consequences. Others mention the heroine's jealousy and paranoia becoming grating.

Final Verdict

"Seiun wo Kakeru" offers a relaxing and informative slice-of-life experience, especially if you enjoy detailed crafting descriptions and a slow-burn plot. However, be prepared for potential inconsistencies in world-building and some shallow character development. If you're looking for a light read to unwind with, this might be worth a try, but don't expect a deeply complex or action-packed story.

Synopsis

There was once an ordinary and remote village to which a man, who had no relatives, appeared. Since then, everything has changed. Labor became pleasant, people stopped starving and became healthier, resulting in population increase. On top of that, the village started to flourish in trade. A time of huge change and considerable turmoil was about to begin, a revolution that no man could turn a blind eye to. In the ancient bronze era, even more distant than medieval times, a certain blacksmith was yet to make his great effort.
