My Thoughts on Mark Me
"Mark Me" is a web novel that I dove into with some excitement, given its blend of fantasy, romance, and school life. The ABO dynamic adds an extra layer of intrigue, and I was curious to see how the story would unfold. Overall, it's been an interesting read, though not without its hitches.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the world-building and the hints of a deeper plot. The slice-of-life aspects are well-executed, and I enjoyed getting to know the characters, especially the MC's sister, who is a standout. The translation quality is also commendable, with helpful footnotes that enhance the reading experience. I found myself easily immersed in the story.
What Works Well
The high school romance aspect is well-trodden ground, but "Mark Me" manages to put its own spin on it. The personal drama surrounding the MC adds a welcome layer of conflict and emotional depth. There's a good balance between the lighthearted moments of school life and the more serious undertones related to family and societal expectations. I appreciate the author's ability to create a believable and engaging world.
Areas of Concern
My biggest issue lies with the male lead. His characterization leans a little too heavily into the "annoyingly persistent" trope, and I found myself increasingly frustrated with his behavior. The MC's reactions, or lack thereof, also contributed to my unease. While I understand the enemies-to-lovers dynamic, the ML's constant disregard for the MC's boundaries felt less like playful banter and more like outright inconsideration. This dynamic made it hard for me to root for their relationship. I felt like the ML was a flat character whose only purpose was to pester the MC and make him uncomfortable.
Final Verdict
"Mark Me" has the potential to be a great read, but the problematic dynamic between the leads holds it back. If you enjoy the "persistent ML" trope, you might find this story more appealing than I did. However, if you prefer your romances with a healthy dose of mutual respect and consideration, you might want to proceed with caution. Despite my reservations, I'm still curious to see where the plot goes, so I'll be keeping an eye on future developments.
