My Thoughts on Don’t Be a Kept Man

"Don't Be a Kept Man" is quite the ride, a web novel that dives deep into second chances, flawed characters, and the messy business of love. With its unique world-hopping system and focus on personal growth, I found myself surprisingly invested. It's definitely not a perfect novel, but its strengths lie in its willingness to explore morally gray areas and create complex relationships.

First Impressions

Initially, I was a bit hesitant. The concept of a "scum MC" undergoing rehabilitation isn't always my cup of tea. However, the episodic nature of the story, with each arc presenting a new world and set of characters, piqued my interest. I'm glad I gave it a shot because it quickly became clear that this wasn't a simple redemption story. It's a character study wrapped in a fantastical package.

What Works Well

What I appreciated most was the author's commitment to flawed characters. These aren't your typical Mary Sues or Gary Stus; they're messy, selfish, and make questionable decisions. But that's what makes them relatable. I found myself empathizing with the MCs, even when I didn't agree with their choices. The romance, too, is far from cookie-cutter. The relationships are often turbulent, even toxic at times, but they also feel incredibly real. I enjoyed the banters between the MCs & MLs and how they were all over each other while still a little bit cautious if each other's feelings. The translation deserves a shout-out as well. The translator is able to express the nuances in language is definitely praiseworthy.

Areas of Concern

One aspect that might deter some readers is the initial difficulty in connecting with the characters. It can be challenging to root for someone who starts out as a "scumbag." Also, some arcs are definitely stronger than others. I found myself more invested in some stories than others.

⚠️ Spoiler Warning

Some arcs contain potentially triggering content, including physical abuse and brief mentions of sexual assault. Reader discretion is advised.

Final Verdict

Despite its flaws, "Don't Be a Kept Man" is a worthwhile read. Its exploration of flawed characters, complex relationships, and the possibility of redemption makes it stand out in the world of web novels. If you're looking for a story that challenges your expectations and isn't afraid to delve into morally gray areas, I highly recommend giving it a try. I give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.

We must be self-sufficient and self-reliant! When the system has bound numerous souls to enter into the bodies of those who only rely on their lovers, what could this lead to? In other words, this is the main character transmigrating into a scummy human being, and creating his own destiny kind of story.
