Who it's for, and whether it holds up.
A school-life omegaverse story following the son of the main couple from "The Short Story of Shaowang," though it reads fine without knowing the parent series. The MC is an alpha trying to hide how conventionally attractive he is so people will like him for reasons other than his face. The ML is a beta with a history he keeps close. The setup sounds light and mostly is, at first.
The characters are the reason to read this. The MC and ML have distinct personalities that don't collapse into generic romantic archetypes as the relationship develops. The side characters have their own trajectories rather than just orbiting the main couple, and the humor is well-timed rather than constant background noise. The consent-forward handling of the romance is a genuine departure from the usual ABO playbook and makes the relationship more pleasant to follow.
The story gets darker, and some of that darkness is heavier than the early tone prepares you for. The ML's illness and how it gets addressed will be uncomfortable for some readers, and the emotional manipulation elements in the plot drew criticism from reviewers who found them unsettling rather than dramatic. The MC's past trauma is woven in rather than dropped as backstory, which is handled reasonably well.
At 4.3, this is a solid mid-tier recommendation for readers who like school-life BL with actual character work and some emotional weight. It's not the most original premise in the genre, but the execution is above average and the relationship is built with care.
