My Thoughts on Lawless Gangster
"Lawless Gangster" is a ride. It's not your typical fluffy BL novel, and I went in knowing that much. What I discovered was a complex story of love, loyalty, and survival within the brutal world of organized crime. It's a novel that stays with you, even if it's not one you'll revisit often.
First Impressions
Initially, I was intrigued by the premise: a teacher falling for a gangster. It felt like a classic setup, but I quickly realized this story had far more depth. The early chapters pulled me in with their gritty realism, and I was eager to see how the relationship between Qi Xiu Yuan and Xiao Li would develop amidst the chaos.
What Works Well
The strength of "Lawless Gangster" lies in its characters and plot. Xiao Li, the gangster, isn't romanticized. He's a product of his environment, and his internal struggles felt authentic. Qi Xiu Yuan, the teacher, is equally compelling. He actively pursues Xiao Li, and I appreciated his persistence and unwavering devotion, even when faced with danger and rejection. The romance, though slow-burn, is ultimately rewarding. The author doesn't shy away from the darker aspects of gang life, which adds a layer of realism and tension to the story. Political twists and backstabbing kept me guessing, and the ending, while bittersweet, felt satisfying.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the overall story, I can see why some readers found it frustrating. The pacing can be uneven, and at times, the plot felt disjointed. Also, the sheer number of characters and their interconnected relationships can be confusing, especially with the Chinese naming conventions. I can also see how some readers might find the MC's relentless pursuit of the ML off-putting, particularly in the early chapters when Xiao Li shows little interest.

The final antagonist, Li Shi Qing, is a tragic figure. His unrequited love for Xiao Li and his ultimate demise added another layer of complexity to the story. Also, the novel has a happy ending. Xiao Li and Qi Xiu Yuan do end up together.
Final Verdict
"Lawless Gangster" is a worthwhile read for those seeking a mature and angsty BL novel with a strong plot and well-developed characters. It's not a light and fluffy romance, but a dark and compelling story about love and survival in a dangerous world. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
