My Thoughts on City of Endless Rain
"City of Endless Rain" is a web novel that definitely left an impression. It's a dark, twisted tale that pulls you in with its mystery and keeps you guessing until the very end. I found myself both captivated and disturbed, which I think speaks to the author's skill in creating a truly unsettling atmosphere.
First Impressions
Going in, I knew to expect a blend of horror, mystery, and psychological elements, and the story delivers on that front. The premise itself is intriguing: an amnesiac protagonist trapped in a perpetually rainy city with a possessive lover and a host of unanswered questions. This setup alone was enough to pique my interest, and I was eager to uncover the secrets hidden within the city's endless downpour.
What Works Well
The novel excels at building suspense. I was constantly on edge, trying to piece together the fragments of the MC's lost memories and decipher the true nature of the city. The writing is evocative, painting a vivid picture of the oppressive atmosphere and the characters' inner turmoil. I also appreciated the MC's determination to uncover the truth, even when faced with manipulation and danger. The pacing is well-managed, with each chapter revealing just enough to keep you hooked without giving away too much too soon. The relationship between the MC and the ML is complex and disturbing, and I found myself constantly questioning their dynamic and the motivations behind their actions.
Areas of Concern
⚠️ Spoiler Warning ⚠️
While the mystery kept me engaged, some aspects of the story felt underdeveloped. The ending, in particular, left me with unanswered questions and a sense of unease. I also felt that some of the side characters could have been fleshed out more, as their motivations were not always clear. The ML's actions throughout the story are disturbing, and I struggled to reconcile his devotion with his manipulative and abusive behavior. The r*pe scene, in particular, was difficult to stomach, and I can understand why some readers would find it problematic.
Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "City of Endless Rain" is a compelling and thought-provoking novel that will stay with you long after you finish reading. It's not for the faint of heart, but if you're a fan of dark mysteries with complex characters and a touch of the supernatural, then I would recommend giving it a try. Just be prepared for a bittersweet ending and a healthy dose of angst. I'd give it a solid 3.5/5 stars.
