My Thoughts on Gentleman’s Friendship
"Gentleman’s Friendship" is definitely a novel that leaves an impression, though perhaps not always a pleasant one. It's a mature story, diving deep into psychological themes, and it doesn't shy away from tragedy and, at times, morally questionable content. It's a rollercoaster of emotions, and I can see why it's garnered such strong reactions.
First Impressions
Going in, I knew this wasn't going to be a light read. The tags alone—bullying, death, depictions of cruelty—made that abundantly clear. The initial chapters paint a picture of Qu Tongqiu (QT), the MC, as somewhat... spineless. I found myself initially struggling to connect with him, but as the story progressed, I began to understand his character more. Ren Ningyuan (RN), the ML, is equally complex. He's not your typical hero; in fact, he's far from it. He presents himself as a gentleman, but there's a darkness lurking beneath the surface.
What Works Well
What truly shines is the intricate plot. The author masterfully weaves a narrative where truths are slowly revealed, keeping you constantly guessing. It’s like a detective novel in that sense, with red herrings and unexpected twists. The angst is palpable, and the novel explores the psychological impact of betrayal and manipulation in a way that feels raw and authentic. The complex relationships between the characters, particularly the MC, ML, and second male lead (SML), are a major draw. The author does a great job of portraying the internal conflicts and motivations of each character. The angst is not just gratuitous; it serves a purpose in exploring the characters' inner demons and the consequences of their actions.
Areas of Concern
While the novel excels in many areas, there are aspects that gave me pause. I found some of the actions of the ML and SML, particularly concerning the MC's autonomy, to be deeply disturbing. The MC's initial passivity can also be frustrating, though his eventual growth is a redeeming quality. Also, the ending felt somewhat rushed, especially given the depth of the revelations and the emotional turmoil the characters endure.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
This section contains spoilers about the plot of "Gentleman's Friendship."
The revelation that the MC's daughter is actually the ML's child is a major turning point. The subsequent events, including the MC's mental breakdown and the ML's attempts to control the situation, are particularly dark. The SML's actions are equally problematic, especially his treatment of the MC during his vulnerable state. The faked death and the eventual reunion of the MC and his daughter are emotionally charged moments.
Final Verdict
"Gentleman’s Friendship" is a complex and emotionally challenging novel. It's not for the faint of heart, but if you're looking for a story that explores the darker side of human relationships and the psychological impact of betrayal, it might be worth a read. Just be sure to heed the trigger warnings and go in with an open mind. I'd give it a solid 3.5/5 stars.
