My Thoughts on Going Against the Wind
"Going Against the Wind" is definitely a web novel that sparks strong opinions, and after diving in, I can see why. It's a story that pushes boundaries and explores the darker side of relationships, which isn't for everyone.
First Impressions
Right off the bat, the premise is… well, controversial. We're dealing with a student-teacher relationship with a significant age gap, and the power dynamics are skewed from the get-go. I went in knowing that this was a "dog blood" novel, and it certainly lives up to that description. If you're looking for a lighthearted romance, steer clear. The tags don't lie; this is mature content with depictions of cruelty and manipulation.
What Works Well
Despite the potentially off-putting premise, I can see why some readers were captivated. The author does a decent job of portraying the MC, Ouyang Xiwen, as a kind but somewhat naive individual. He's an introvert searching for connection, and his vulnerability makes him relatable, even when his choices are questionable. I also appreciate the author's exploration of the ML's character, Xiao Xuan, even though he's far from perfect. He's a complex individual shaped by a difficult family environment, which, while not excusing his actions, provides some context. The angst is definitely dialed up to eleven, and if you're a fan of "wife chasing crematorium" stories, this might scratch that itch.
Areas of Concern
However, the novel isn't without its flaws. The toxicity is a major sticking point, and the line between dubcon and outright r*pe can be blurry at times. I can understand why some readers found the MC's passivity frustrating, and the ML's actions are often reprehensible. Some plot points, like the resolution with the ML's brother, felt rushed and underdeveloped. The ending also felt a bit too easy, considering the amount of pain and betrayal that preceded it.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Several readers have mentioned the ML's brother forcing him to break up with the MC. Also the MC being assaulted and the ML trying to win him back after a six-year gap. Be aware of these plot points before reading.
Final Verdict
Overall, "Going Against the Wind" is a flawed but potentially compelling read. It's a story that explores toxic relationships and the consequences of betrayal, but it's not for the faint of heart. If you're willing to look past the problematic elements and appreciate the author's exploration of flawed characters, you might find something to enjoy here. However, if you're sensitive to depictions of abuse and manipulation, I'd recommend giving this one a pass. I'd give it a 3 out of 5 stars.
