Author profile

Bai Liu is one of the more interesting protagonists in recent horror-game web fiction. He is calculating, amoral about money, genuinely dangerous, and the narrative does not soften him into a reluctant hero. He wants what he wants and navigates the horror game system accordingly. The early arcs, Siren Town and the Exploding Train especially, establish the tone efficiently and set a high bar.

The world-building is the novel's real achievement. Details from early arcs circle back with surprising precision, and the game system has enough internal logic that the horror scenarios feel constructed rather than arbitrary. The Wandering Circus ensemble in particular is worth sticking around for: each character has a full backstory, a distinct moral position, and genuine weight in the plot. The found-family dynamic here is unusually well-executed.

Pacing is uneven. Some arcs run considerably longer than they need to, and the slowdown is noticeable after the tight early chapters. The ML is largely absent for long stretches, which will frustrate readers who came specifically for the romance. The ending compresses a number of character resolutions in ways that feel abrupt against the deliberate pacing of earlier sections.

The parallel timeline material in the later arcs, including a character who arrives as an apparent antagonist, divides readers. It is ambitious, and it mostly works, though it demands patience.

At 4.5, this is one of the better entries in the horror-game subgenre. The premise is not new but the execution, particularly the character work and the careful foreshadowing, earns the rating.

Synopsis

After losing his job Bai Liu became involved with an unstoppable horror live streaming game full of various monsters and players with killer intent. Initially, everyone thought Bai Liu was just an ordinary person who strayed into the game. Later, they realized it was this game that welcomed its god with victory and a laurel crown saying, “Welcome home.”
