My Thoughts on Flower Vase
"Flower Vase" is a completed web novel that I recently dove into, and it proved to be quite the experience. While the overall rating sits comfortably above average, my feelings are a bit more complex. It's a story that blends comedy, drama, romance, and yaoi elements, and while it didn't completely blow me away, it held my attention.
First Impressions
Going in, I was intrigued by the premise: a "flower vase" MC, Gu Yan, who's more eye candy than talented actor, and his relationship with his "gold master," Qin Zhiyuan. I found the initial setup interesting, especially the idea that Gu Yan falls in love first and is steadfast in his affections. That's a dynamic I don't often encounter, and it certainly piqued my curiosity.
What Works Well
What I appreciated most was the MC's character. He's self-aware, humorous, mature, and intelligent. He knows his flaws but isn't afraid to acknowledge his strengths (like his looks!). I also enjoyed the development of the relationship between Gu Yan and Qin Zhiyuan, from a fostering arrangement to friends and eventually, lovers. The second half, which focuses on Qin Zhiyuan's introspection and journey, was also well-done. I found myself enjoying the ML's slow realization that he likes MC more than as just a bed partner, and that he genuinely misses the other because of all the time they spent together. His attempts to learn to cook for Gu Yan were endearing and added a comedic touch.
Areas of Concern
However, I do have some reservations. I found some of the plot points to be a bit bland. Also, the ending felt rushed. The story could have benefited from more development.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers might be put off by Qin Zhiyuan's initial behavior, particularly the fact that he has other bed partners and is hung up on a past love. It's a trope that can be off-putting, and I can understand why some might find him unlikable at first. The MC gets drugged and sexually assaulted by Qin Feng, but to ml, it's just his younger brother being immature. Qin Jing endangers MC with a s*x scandal and revenge p. ML can't prevent anything nor properly resolve things after.
Final Verdict
Overall, "Flower Vase" is an enjoyable read with well-developed characters and a unique dynamic. It's not without its flaws, but the strengths outweigh the weaknesses. If you're looking for a mature romance with a cunning protagonist and a doting love interest, I'd recommend giving it a try. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
