My Thoughts on Perfection

"Perfection" is a web novel that certainly sparked my interest, and after diving in, I can see why it has garnered such a diverse range of opinions. It's a mature romance with a slice-of-life feel, set against the backdrop of the entertainment industry. It's definitely a story that requires a bit of patience, but I found myself ultimately enjoying the journey.

First Impressions

Initially, I was intrigued by the premise of a protagonist navigating the complexities of a new life and body after transmigration. The initial chapters drew me in, and I was eager to see how the main character, Wen Jianing, would adapt to his circumstances and the world of showbiz. The early interactions with Lu Jinlang, the male lead, were definitely compelling, if a bit… intense.

What Works Well

One of the strongest aspects of "Perfection" is the character development. Wen Jianing's internal struggles with his new identity and physical limitations felt authentic. I also appreciated the slow-burn romance between Wen and Lu. Their relationship begins as a mutually beneficial arrangement and gradually evolves into something deeper. I found this approach to be more realistic and engaging than instant, head-over-heels love. Many readers praised the author's ability to portray the complexities of a mature relationship, where both characters have their own flaws and insecurities. The novel also doesn't shy away from the less glamorous aspects of the entertainment industry, which adds a layer of realism to the story.

Areas of Concern

⚠️ Spoiler Warning ⚠️

While I enjoyed many aspects of the novel, there were a few elements that gave me pause. The non-consensual elements in the early stages of the relationship between Wen and Lu were definitely problematic. The power imbalance between them also raised some red flags. While the story attempts to address these issues and show growth in both characters, I can understand why some readers found these aspects off-putting. I also noticed that several reviewers mentioned inconsistencies in the plot and character behavior, particularly regarding the protagonist's alcohol consumption and the couple's public interactions.

Final Verdict

Despite its flaws, "Perfection" is a worthwhile read for those who enjoy mature romances with complex characters. The story explores themes of identity, acceptance, and the challenges of navigating the entertainment industry. While the non-consensual elements and inconsistencies may be a turn-off for some, the overall story is compelling and ultimately rewarding. I'd recommend going into this with an open mind and a willingness to grapple with some of the more difficult aspects of the story.

Synopsis

Wen Jianing, who won the best actor award at the age of thirty-four, was reborn in a twenty-year-old young man, Ke Xinhang, overnight. Ke Xinhang has defective g**itals, but he is full of yearning for the entertainment industry. Taking the opportunity of an audition, Wen Jianing wanted to return to the entertainment industry, but he also met his former career opponent Lu Jinlang. To Wen Jianing’s surprise, Lu Jinlang, who was not familiar in the past, seemed to have the intention of supporting him.
