My Thoughts on Don’t Hide From Me!
"Don’t Hide From Me!" promised a sweet, fluffy romance, and while it delivered on some fronts, I found myself wrestling with a few aspects of the story. This novel seems to be a real mixed bag, eliciting strong reactions from readers, both positive and negative.
First Impressions
The initial premise – a "straight" ML who's clearly head-over-heels for the MC, and an MC struggling with his own feelings – definitely grabbed my attention. The summary is accurate to the story. I was ready for some classic BL shenanigans and maybe a little bit of angst.
What Works Well
Many readers praised the intense devotion of Lu Xun, the male lead. His actions, even before realizing his feelings, scream "boyfriend material," and his commitment to Ye Yao is undeniable. I can see the appeal of a character who would do anything for his love, and I appreciate that the MC isn't a pushover. Ye Yao is portrayed as rational and level-headed, carefully considering the potential pitfalls of the relationship before diving in. Also, the parents of both MC and ML are supportive.
Areas of Concern
However, I found some of the critiques hard to ignore. The portrayal of Lu Xun's initial homophobia is a major sticking point. While the story attempts to explain it through his upbringing, I can see how it could be off-putting or even harmful to some readers. There are also concerns about the obsessive behavior exhibited by Lu Xun, with some interpreting it as yandere-esque, while others felt it was simply overbearing and not handled well. A few readers also mentioned that the side characters were bland and the plot was repetitive.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some reviewers mentioned specific plot points that could spoil the experience for new readers. For example, the ML's initial homophobia, the extent of his obsessive behavior, and the resolution of their misunderstandings are all discussed in detail. Proceed with caution if you want to go in blind.
Final Verdict
"Don’t Hide From Me!" is a novel that seems to depend heavily on personal preference. If you're looking for a light, fluffy read with a devoted (though potentially problematic) ML and don't mind some questionable tropes, you might enjoy it. However, if you're sensitive to homophobia, stalking behavior, or dislike characters who are frustratingly dense, this might not be the novel for you. While it has its charms, I think it's important to approach it with realistic expectations.
