My Thoughts on My Underachieving Seatmate Doesn’t Need Any Comforting
This novel was such a pleasant surprise! I went in expecting a lighthearted school romance, and while it definitely delivers on the fluff, it also surprised me with its depth. "My Underachieving Seatmate Doesn’t Need Any Comforting" is a sweet story that also tackles some pretty serious themes.
First Impressions
Initially, I was a little thrown off by the summary. It didn't quite capture the essence of the story, and honestly, almost deterred me from picking it up. I'm glad I didn't let that stop me, though! The beginning is filled with humor and misunderstandings, setting a light tone that quickly drew me in. The dynamic between Qiao Shao and He Shen is adorable from the start.
What Works Well
What I loved most was the characters. Qiao Shao is such a genuinely good person, trying his best despite his past traumas. His hard work and determination are inspiring, and his interactions with He Shen are just pure sweetness. And He Shen? He's the perfect doting love interest, supportive and caring, while also having his own struggles to overcome. The way the author explores their individual mental states, and how they help each other heal, is done with sensitivity and care. The side characters are also a delight, adding humor and support to the main couple's journey. I found myself really invested in their growth as well. Also, the family dynamics, especially Qiao Shao's relationship with his dad and grandfathers, were heartwarming.
Areas of Concern
While I thoroughly enjoyed the novel, I can see where some readers might have issues. The beginning can feel a bit slow. Additionally, the plot is not very complex and has a few plot holes.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some reviewers have noted plot holes that may make the reader question the reality of the world the author has built. If you are sensitive to plot holes, then you may want to consider these issues before diving in.
Final Verdict
Overall, "My Underachieving Seatmate Doesn’t Need Any Comforting" is a heartwarming and fluffy read that will leave you with a smile. Despite some minor flaws, the well-developed characters, sweet romance, and exploration of mental health make it a worthwhile read. If you're looking for a feel-good story with a touch of depth, I highly recommend giving this one a try.
