My Thoughts on Deep Desire
"Deep Desire" promised a mature romance, and for the most part, it delivered. I went in expecting a simple friends-with-benefits story, but I was pleasantly surprised by the depth and complexity of the characters and their journey. It's a story about healing, acceptance, and the often-messy reality of love, making it stand out in the modern yaoi genre.
First Impressions
Initially, I wasn't entirely sold on the main characters. The cold CEO, Lu Jingshen, and the cheerful pilot, Feng Si, seemed like familiar archetypes. I found Feng Si a little too pushy at first, and Lu Jingshen's indecisiveness was frustrating. However, as the story progressed, I started to appreciate their imperfections. They felt incredibly human, grappling with their own past traumas and insecurities.
What Works Well
The strength of "Deep Desire" lies in its character development. Watching Lu Jingshen confront his past and gradually open himself up to Feng Si was genuinely moving. The author does a great job of portraying the nuances of their relationship, showing both the sweet moments and the angsty conflicts. I also appreciated the healthy dynamic between the leads. Feng Si's unwavering support and clear boundaries created a refreshing contrast to the often-unequal power dynamics found in similar stories. The family dynamic was also a huge plus for me. I loved seeing the support they gave to Lu Jingshen.
Areas of Concern
While I thoroughly enjoyed the overall story, I did find certain aspects a bit frustrating. Lu Jingshen's internal struggles and commitment issues sometimes felt repetitive, and I wished the story had addressed his hangups sooner.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers have pointed out that Lu Jingshen's hmophobia is rooted in a traumatic event, which is a significant plot point. It's a relief to finally get an explanation beyond just internalized hmophobia.
Final Verdict
Despite a few minor drawbacks, "Deep Desire" is a worthwhile read. It's a mature and thoughtful romance that explores complex themes with sensitivity and depth. If you're looking for a story that goes beyond the typical tropes and offers a realistic portrayal of love and healing, I'd definitely recommend giving this novel a try.
