My Thoughts on Da Tang Shuang Long Zhuan
"Da Tang Shuang Long Zhuan" is a wuxia adventure that I found myself thoroughly enjoying, even with a few minor gripes. It’s a sprawling tale of two orphans rising through the ranks in a turbulent era, and it definitely left an impression.
First Impressions
From the get-go, I was hooked by the promise of action and character development. The initial premise of two underdogs navigating a world of martial arts, political intrigue, and hidden treasures is certainly appealing, and the story generally delivers on that front. I also appreciated that this is more grounded in Wuxia than Xianxia, which is a nice change of pace.
What Works Well
The biggest strength, in my opinion, lies in the characters, especially the two main protagonists. Their bond feels genuine, and their individual journeys are compelling. I also appreciate the author's attention to detail when writing fight scenes. I've read a lot of wuxia where the descriptions are clunky and nonsensical, but that's not the case here. I really enjoyed the world-building. The story is set against a backdrop of political struggle and power plays, which keeps things interesting. The plot kept me guessing, and it's not always clear who the heroes and villains are, which adds another layer of intrigue.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the novel, there were a few things that niggled at me. One minor issue I noticed was the plot seemed to get repetitive as the story went on. The author seemed to reuse story beats. Also, I felt like the plot had some inconsistencies at times. While it didn't ruin my experience, it did detract from it a little.
Final Verdict
Overall, I'd recommend "Da Tang Shuang Long Zhuan" to anyone looking for a good wuxia story. It's packed with action, adventure, and compelling characters. While it's not perfect, the strengths far outweigh the weaknesses. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars. It's a journey worth taking, even if there are a few bumps along the way.
