My Thoughts on Control Freak
"Control Freak" is a completed yaoi novel that pulled me in with its promise of mature characters navigating a complex relationship. The story focuses on a romance between two men in their thirties, and I found myself intrigued by the premise. While the journey had its ups and downs for me, I can see why it resonates with many readers.
First Impressions
Initially, I was hooked by the straightforward and honest nature of the protagonist. He knows what he wants and isn't afraid to pursue it, which is always refreshing to see in a character. The love interest started out as more of a mystery, with hints of a hidden personality that kept me guessing. I was eager to see how these two distinct personalities would interact and evolve.
What Works Well
The character development is definitely a strong point. I appreciated the maturity of the protagonists, both of whom have past relationship experience. The novel explores how their love helps them heal and grow, which added a layer of depth to the romance. I also enjoyed the pacing of the story, which allowed the relationship to develop naturally and believably. The author does a good job of showing how much the characters care for each other as the story progresses.

Areas of Concern
My enjoyment waned somewhat when the love interest's "true self" was revealed. The shift in the power dynamic, with the protagonist becoming increasingly submissive, didn't entirely sit well with me. While the relationship is consensual, I personally prefer romances with a more balanced dynamic. The love interest's controlling nature, both in and out of the bedroom, became a dominant theme, and I found myself hoping for a bit more compromise and adaptation from his side. I realize the story is called "Control Freak" for a reason, but I was hoping for a more nuanced exploration of control and vulnerability.
Final Verdict
Overall, "Control Freak" is a worthwhile read, especially if you enjoy mature characters and a dominant/submissive dynamic. While the shift in the relationship dynamic didn't entirely align with my personal preferences, I can appreciate the author's exploration of these themes. If you're looking for a story with confident characters, a straightforward plot, and a healthy dose of drama, this might be the novel for you. I would recommend checking it out, but be aware of the potential shift in power dynamics as the story progresses.
