My Thoughts on Chen Ruobing and I
"Chen Ruobing and I" is a quick read that left me with a lot to think about. It's a yuri romance that's definitely more melancholic than fluffy, which might not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's a refreshing change of pace from the usual wish-fulfillment stories.
First Impressions
I was immediately drawn in by the realism of the story. Told from Sha Yu's perspective, the novel has a very down-to-earth feel. It follows the lives of two best friends from high school as they navigate their feelings for each other and the societal pressures around them. The translation is excellent, which made it easy to get lost in their world.
What Works Well
The strength of this novel lies in its characters and their emotional depth. Sha Yu's feelings are portrayed so vividly that I felt like I was experiencing her journey alongside her. Chen Ruobing, though seen only through Sha Yu's eyes, is equally compelling. The novel explores the complexities of a lesbian relationship in a realistic, modern Chinese setting. It's about growing up, figuring out your identity, and dealing with the pain and responsibility that comes with love. Many readers will appreciate how the characters' choices have weight and consequence, making the story all the more impactful. The ending, while it takes a while to get there, feels earned and genuine.
Areas of Concern
While I appreciated the realism, I can see why some readers might find the story too bittersweet. The lack of Chen Ruobing's perspective can be frustrating, leaving you wanting to know more about her thoughts and motivations. I can see why some readers would not enjoy how she seemingly submits to societal pressure. Also, the fact that the main characters don't end up together for 16 years may be a turnoff for some readers.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some reviewers have mentioned a disturbing scene where Sha Yu discovers red marks on Ruobing's body from her boyfriend. While this is addressed, some readers felt it was not explored thoroughly enough.
Final Verdict
Overall, I enjoyed "Chen Ruobing and I." It's a bittersweet and realistic story about love, friendship, and societal expectations. If you're looking for a quick yuri read with depth and emotional resonance, this is definitely worth checking out. Just be prepared for a more melancholic experience.
