My Thoughts on She’s so Cheeky for a Commoner!
"She's so Cheeky for a Commoner!" is an interesting companion piece to "I Favor the Villainess," offering a new perspective on a story I already enjoyed. It's definitely a fun read, especially if you're already familiar with the original.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the promise of seeing events unfold from Claire's perspective. The dynamic between Claire and Rei is inherently entertaining, and the premise of a cheeky commoner teasing a sheltered noble had me hooked. I jumped in expecting a lighthearted and fluffy experience, and for the most part, that's what I got.
What Works Well
The humor is definitely a strong point. The interactions between the main characters are genuinely funny, and seeing Claire slowly fall for Rei is quite precious. I particularly enjoyed getting a deeper understanding of Claire's character development and her internal thoughts. The author does a great job of highlighting her growth throughout the story. The world-building and underlying class tensions also add depth to the otherwise lighthearted narrative, creating a nice balance.
Areas of Concern
While enjoyable, I feel like this side story doesn't quite stand on its own. If you haven't read "I Favor the Villainess," you might feel a bit lost. Key plot points and character motivations are sometimes glossed over, assuming the reader already has prior knowledge. This can make the pacing feel a bit disjointed at times. It leans heavily into fan service, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it does mean that it doesn't quite capture the same heart as the original.
Final Verdict
Overall, I'd recommend "She's so Cheeky for a Commoner!" if you're already a fan of "I Favor the Villainess." It's a fun and entertaining addition to the series, offering a fresh perspective on familiar events. However, if you're new to the world, I'd suggest starting with the original story first. While it might not be perfect, it's a worthwhile read for those who want to spend more time with these characters and this world.
