My Thoughts on Chasing Game

"Chasing Game" is definitely a novel that evokes strong reactions, and after diving in, I can see why. It's a shounen ai story with a lot of heart, a fair bit of angst, and some potentially triggering elements that readers should be aware of. Overall, it was an interesting read, though not without its problematic aspects.

First Impressions

Initially, I was intrigued by the premise: a proactive MC relentlessly pursuing a seemingly cold ML. The tags like "clingy lover" and "tsundere" definitely piqued my interest. However, I quickly realized this story wasn't going to be all fluff and sweetness. The beginning is quite intense.

What Works Well

Despite the initial shock, I found myself drawn to the MC's unwavering devotion. Many readers praised his persistence, and I agree – there's something admirable about his determination to win over the ML, even in the face of constant "rejections." The story is relatively short, making it a quick and engaging read. I also appreciated the slice-of-life elements and the exploration of first love, even if it was a bumpy road. I also thought the ending was very sweet.

Areas of Concern

One of the biggest sticking points for me, and something I saw echoed in other reviews, is the questionable nature of the MC's initial actions. I can understand why some readers were completely turned off by the blackmail and potentially non-consensual acts in the first chapter. It definitely casts a shadow over the rest of the story, and it requires a certain willingness to look past it in order to appreciate the characters' eventual growth. I also found the ML's initial coldness frustrating at times. While I understand he has his reasons, it did make it difficult to root for the relationship in the beginning.

⚠️ Spoiler Warning

Several reviews mentioned family drama and homophobia as significant themes in the story. The ML's family and societal pressures play a big role in his initial reluctance and the obstacles the couple faces. Be aware that these themes are present and can be emotionally heavy.

Final Verdict

"Chasing Game" is a complicated novel. It's a story about persistence, overcoming obstacles, and finding love in unexpected places. However, it's also a story with potentially triggering elements and morally grey characters. If you're looking for a fluffy, feel-good romance, this might not be for you. But if you're willing to delve into a story with some angst and a proactive MC, "Chasing Game" might just capture your heart. I'd give it a solid 3.5/5.
