My Thoughts on Blank Charge
"Blank Charge" is a web novel that pulled me in with its blend of comedy, drama, mystery, and romance (with a good dose of yaoi). I was intrigued by the premise of childhood friends turned lovers, especially with the "enemies to lovers" trope thrown in for good measure. After diving in, I found myself with mixed feelings, landing somewhere in the middle of the rave reviews and harsher critiques.
First Impressions
The initial setup is compelling: a lawyer (MC) and a judge (ML) with a shared past and a complicated present. I was immediately drawn to the idea of navigating legal cases intertwined with personal drama. The cross-dressing tag also piqued my curiosity, adding a layer of potential for comedic moments and exploring character dynamics.
What Works Well
The main strength of "Blank Charge" lies in its plot. The cases are interesting, providing a good backdrop for the developing relationship between the MC and ML. I enjoyed the mystery surrounding the death of the MC's parents and how it connected to the present-day legal battles. The author clearly put in the work to research the legal aspects, which added a layer of authenticity to the story. And, I won't lie, the smut scenes are pretty hot and well-written, adding a definite spark to the romance. The bickering between the MC and ML is also a highlight, creating a playful and steamy atmosphere.
Areas of Concern
Despite the intriguing plot and steamy romance, I did find some aspects of "Blank Charge" less appealing. The dynamic between the MC and ML can be frustrating. The MC's near obsession with the ML felt a little over the top at times, and I can see how some readers might find it pathetic. The ML's overprotectiveness and possessiveness also rubbed me the wrong way, especially considering how he initially abandoned the MC. While his intentions were supposedly noble, the execution felt controlling and unjustified. Additionally, the pacing felt a bit off, with some plot points feeling rushed or underdeveloped.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Several reviewers mentioned that the ML initially left the MC after the death of his parents, which led to a period of estrangement. The ML's reasons for this decision are revealed later in the story, but some readers found his actions unforgivable. Be aware that this plot point may affect your enjoyment of the romance.
Final Verdict
"Blank Charge" is a mixed bag. It has a compelling plot, steamy romance, and engaging characters, but it also suffers from questionable character dynamics and pacing issues. If you enjoy mysteries with a side of yaoi and can overlook some of the problematic aspects of the MC/ML relationship, then it's worth giving it a try. However, if you're looking for perfectly balanced characters and a flawless plot, you might be disappointed. Overall, I'd give it a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars. It's entertaining but definitely not without its flaws.
