My Thoughts on After Marrying the Lord of the Underworld
"After Marrying the Lord of the Underworld" was a wild ride, and honestly, I'm still processing everything. It's a blend of horror, fantasy, romance, and humor, all stirred together with Chinese mythology. While it might not be for everyone, it definitely left an impression.
First Impressions
Going in, I was expecting a spooky story, but I was surprised by the comedic undertones. The premise itself is intriguing: a ghost exorcist MC forced into a ghost marriage to combat his bad luck, only to later encounter his underworldly husband. I was immediately hooked by the potential for both romance and supernatural shenanigans.
What Works Well
The relationship between the MC and ML is definitely a highlight. The ML is a devoted, sometimes goofy, "love-brain" who is completely smitten with the MC. I found their dynamic endearing, especially the ML's attempts to woo the MC, even with his questionable underworld habits. The author did a great job of making their connection feel genuine, and I appreciated that the ML respected the MC's boundaries.
I also enjoyed the side characters and the various exorcism arcs. Each arc felt connected to the overarching plot, and I liked that the side characters had their own resolutions. The world-building is well done, seamlessly blending modern society with elements of Chinese mythology, ghosts, and demons. The story explores themes of love, loyalty, and atonement, adding depth beyond the supernatural elements.
Areas of Concern
While I generally enjoyed the story, I can see why some readers might be put off. One thing that was mentioned by a reviewer was that the MC sometimes felt like he was going with the flow without a plan. I also noticed the horror elements might be too light for some hardcore horror fans.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some plot twists caught me off guard, particularly the revelations about past lives and the true nature of certain characters. Be prepared for some emotional moments and unexpected turns as the story unfolds!
Final Verdict
Overall, "After Marrying the Lord of the Underworld" is a unique and entertaining read. While it has some minor flaws, the strong characters, engaging plot, and healthy romance make it a worthwhile experience. If you're looking for a supernatural story with a devoted ML and a good balance of humor and heart, I'd recommend giving this one a try. I'm giving it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
