My Thoughts on After an Infinite Flow Player Retires
"After an Infinite Flow Player Retires" promised a comedic break for an OP protagonist, but what I found was a surprisingly plot-heavy paranormal mystery with a dash of romance. It’s definitely a unique read that blends genres in a way that mostly works, though it does have some quirks.
First Impressions
Going in, I expected a lighthearted romp with a retired gamer trying to live a normal life. While the initial chapters lean into that, with our MC desperately trying to hide his past, the story quickly evolves. It becomes a paranormal investigation, delving into conspiracies and the blurring lines between the game world and reality. This shift was unexpected, but ultimately welcome, drawing me into the unfolding mystery.
What Works Well
The plot itself is a strong point. I appreciated the surprising twists and the satisfying resolution to the central mystery. The dynamic between the characters is also engaging. The MC is wonderfully competent, living up to his ex-#1 Player status, but he still manages to get into hilarious situations. The ML is definitely a yandere, but I found his obsession, while intense, to be a compelling aspect of his character, especially considering his complicated past with the MC. The comedic undertones are a welcome addition, never detracting from the serious plot, but providing moments of levity. The blend of horror and action elements is also well-executed, creating a thrilling reading experience.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the story overall, I did find the pacing a bit uneven at times. Some plot points felt rushed, and I wished there was more exploration of the characters' backstories. The world-building, while decent, could have been more detailed, especially regarding the infinite flow game itself. Also, while the yandere ML was interesting, I can see how his obsessive nature might not appeal to all readers. The MC's feelings for the ML could have been more clearly expressed.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers might be sensitive to the ML's initial desire to kill the MC to keep him by his side as a ghost. This element is crucial to their backstory and shapes their current relationship, but it's definitely a dark aspect that could be triggering for some. Also, the ending involves a bit of self-sacrifice and potentially immortality for the MC, which might not sit well with everyone.
Final Verdict
Despite some minor flaws, "After an Infinite Flow Player Retires" is a solid and engaging read. The plot-heavy narrative, combined with the unique characters and blend of genres, makes it stand out from other infinite flow stories. If you're looking for a paranormal mystery with a yandere romance and don't mind a few dark elements, I'd recommend giving this one a try.
