My Thoughts on They All Say I’ve Met a Ghost
"They All Say I’ve Met a Ghost" is a delightful surprise, a blend of comedy, horror, romance, and slice-of-life that I thoroughly enjoyed. It's a story about a righteous teacher who, in his unwavering belief in science and Marxism, refuses to believe in ghosts, even when surrounded by them. The premise alone had me hooked, and the execution didn't disappoint.
First Impressions
From the very beginning, the humor shines. The protagonist, Shen Jianguo, is incredibly dense, hilariously rationalizing every supernatural occurrence with logic and scientific explanations. I found myself constantly laughing at his antics and misunderstandings. The story's lighthearted tone made it easy to binge-read, and I quickly became invested in the quirky world and its inhabitants.
What Works Well
The characters are a major highlight. Shen Jianguo's unwavering righteousness and obliviousness are endlessly entertaining, and the ghosts themselves are endearing and well-developed. Each ghost has a unique backstory, and their interactions with the MC are both funny and heartwarming. The male lead, Ning Tiance, is a sweet and supportive character who provides a nice contrast to the MC's density. I particularly appreciated the healthy dynamic between them, with both characters respecting and learning from each other.
The plot is well-paced and engaging, with a good balance of humor, slice-of-life moments, and subtle romance. The author's writing style is unique and refreshing, and the translation is excellent, capturing the humor and heart of the story perfectly. I also appreciated the story's positive message about empathy, understanding, and seeing the good in others.
Areas of Concern
While I thoroughly enjoyed the story, I do have a few minor criticisms. The romance is somewhat slow-burn, and I would have liked to see more development in that area. Additionally, the ending felt a bit rushed, and I would have loved to see more of the MC's interactions with his students before they departed.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers may consider the following a spoiler: The MC never truly realizes that he is surrounded by ghosts, which is a major source of the story's humor.
Final Verdict
Overall, "They All Say I’ve Met a Ghost" is a fantastic read that I highly recommend. It's a unique and refreshing story with lovable characters, a well-developed plot, and plenty of humor. If you're looking for a lighthearted and heartwarming novel that will leave you with a smile on your face, this is definitely one to check out. I give it a solid 4.5 out of 5 stars.
