My Thoughts on Accompany You to the Top of the World
"Accompany You to the Top of the World" is a completed Chinese web novel in the drama, josei, romance, and sports genres. It's a wild ride, and I came out of it with mixed feelings. It definitely has its strengths, but be warned: you might find yourself initially disliking the main characters, especially the male lead.
First Impressions
I'll be honest, my first impression wasn't great. The beginning is rough, and the initial interactions between the main characters are... problematic. The female lead, Qiu Ying, comes across as naive and even a bit desperate, while the male lead, Xiang Kong, is, well, a jerk. He's arrogant and treats her poorly, making it difficult to root for their relationship. But, stick with it, because there are some redeeming qualities that come later.
What Works Well
What kept me reading was the character development. Both Qiu Ying and Xiang Kong undergo significant changes as the story progresses. Qiu Ying, despite her initial naivety, shows resilience and determination as she navigates the competitive world of e-sports and livestreaming. She learns from her mistakes and works hard to achieve her goals, which I found satisfying. Xiang Kong, too, evolves. He starts off as a misunderstood and cocky pro-gamer, but eventually reveals a more humble and supportive side. His dedication to his team and his willingness to help Qiu Ying succeed are admirable. The e-sports setting is also well-done, with the story diving into the world of professional gaming. The second male lead adds a lighthearted touch, providing some much-needed comedic relief.
Areas of Concern
The biggest issue for me was the male lead's initial behavior. His early treatment of the female lead borders on unacceptable, and it's difficult to completely forgive him, even as he changes. I also felt that some aspects of the story, like the female lead's family situation, could have been explored in more depth. The ending, while satisfying for some, left me feeling a bit unfulfilled, particularly regarding the female lead's career choices.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers may find Xiang Kong's early actions towards Qiu Ying to be a form of sexual harassment. Qiu Ying also faces considerable hardship due to her stepfather. Be aware of these elements before diving in.
Final Verdict
"Accompany You to the Top of the World" is a flawed but ultimately engaging story about growth, perseverance, and finding love in unexpected places. If you're willing to overlook the problematic beginning and appreciate the character development, you might find yourself enjoying this one. It's a light read with a focus on relationships and personal journeys, perfect if you're looking for something with a blend of romance and sports. I'd recommend it with the caveat that the initial chapters might be off-putting for some.
