My Thoughts on With the [Alchemy Box], Create, Enchant and Dominate! With a Box That Can Create Anything, Begin Building a New Life on a Deserted Island
This title is quite the mouthful, isn't it? But after diving into "With the [Alchemy Box]," I can see why it needed all those words to hint at what's inside. It's a mix of cozy island life, OP skills, and a protagonist trying to make sense of a world that's given him a second chance.
First Impressions
My first impression was definitely positive. The story jumps right in, establishing the MC's background and motivations without wasting too much time. I appreciated that the author didn't drag out the initial setup, getting to the core plot relatively quickly. It’s the kind of story that seems designed to be a light, enjoyable read.
What Works Well
The core strength of this novel lies in its ability to entertain without taking itself too seriously. The "Animal Crossing: New Horizons" comparison isn’t far off. It’s a SoL story with the MC using his alchemy box to build a new life. I found the interactions between the MC and other characters, especially the potential love interests, to be genuinely fun. The novel also does a good job of showcasing the MC's past traumas and how they affect his decisions, even if he is a bit dense at times. There is a good balance of humour and character development.
Areas of Concern
While the lighthearted nature is a plus, it also leads to some potential drawbacks. The world-building could be more developed. The MC can sometimes come across as a bit too convenient, solving problems with ease due to his overpowered abilities. I can see how some readers might find the fight scenes lacking impact, wishing for a bit more depth and tension. Also, some of the writing can feel a bit awkward at times.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Okay, here's where I have to tread carefully. There's a point where the MC reveals his powers to a prince, based on a sheep's judgement of the prince's character. This reveal feels a little rushed and potentially risky, given the MC's initial reluctance to become a tool for others. I hope it doesn't lead to the story falling into predictable tropes.
Final Verdict
Overall, "With the [Alchemy Box]" is a fun, easy read that doesn't demand too much from the reader. If you're looking for a lighthearted story with a mix of island life, alchemy, and a protagonist building a new family, this might be right up your alley. Just be prepared for some cliches and a plot that prioritizes enjoyment over deep world-building. I'd say give it a try if you want a good time.
